How To Stay Healthy While Pregnant During Covid 19 Pandemic

Staying healthy is a life-long commitment people usually make to themselves, for a pregnant woman, its a responsibility she owe to the bundle of joy growing within her. Amidst the daunting challenges of hormonal changes that occurs during pregnancy, its now important for expecting mothers to prioritize staying healthy and Covid-19 free during this pandemic. Here are some tips on how to stay healthy while pregnant during this challenging time:

1 FOLLOW THE COVID-19 PREVENTION GUIDELINES

The guidelines are as follows;

  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Use a tissue when you or anyone in your family coughs or sneezes, discard it and wash your hands
  • Avoid contact with someone who is displaying symptoms of coronavirus (these symptoms include high temperature and/or new and continuous cough)
  • Avoid non-essential use of public transport when possible
  • Work from home, when possible
  • Avoid large and small gatherings in public spaces, noting that pubs, restaurants, leisure centres and similar venues are currently shut as infections spread easily in closed spaces where people gather together
  • Avoid gatherings with friends and family – keep in touch using remote technology such as phone, internet and social media
  • Use telephone or online services to contact your GP or other essential services.

2 EAT HEALTHY FOODS

There are a lot of restrictions on foods a pregnant woman cannot consume, they are; fishes with high mercury content, raw or under-cooked meat, unpasteurized milk or diary products, raw eggs etc. Experts usually advice pregnant women to avoid junk and maintain a healthy diet by eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains, calcium-rich foods, and foods low in saturated fat.

3 TAKE YOUR PRE-NATAL VITAMINS

From when you are planning to have a baby, you can consult your doctor to prescribe pre-natal vitamin like folic acid for you. Its essential for you as an expecting mum to take all your pre-natal vitamins daily in order to prevent any birth defects and support the nutrition of the baby in the womb.

4 DRINK LOT OF WATER

Water is one of the classes of nutrients every human being need. Its certainly normal for pregnant women to avoid taking lot of water because of the frequent urination that comes with their state. However, it is advised for expecting mothers to take lots of water to stay hydrated.

5 AVOID TAKING ALCOHOL OR SMOKING

Drinking alcohol increases the risk of having a baby with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). FASD can cause abnormal facial features, severe learning disabilities, and behavioral issues. Hence, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers should not take alcohol or smoke as smoking increases the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), premature births, miscarriages, and more.

6 TRY OUT PREGNANCY FRIENDLY EXERCISES

Exercise helps to keep our bodies and it’s organs fit. In pregnancy, exercise can lower the risk of preterm birth, cesarean birth, excessive weight gain, gestational diabetes or hypertensive disorders such as pre-eclampsia, lower birth weight and many more. Taking Walks is usually advised among some other exercises like yoga and kegel. Apart from the benefits of exercising on your health, it can also serve as a good bonding activities for you and your partner.

7 GET GOOD SLEEP DAILY

When you become pregnant, one of the first symptoms you may notice is being overwhelmingly tired, even exhausted. Sleep will be irresistible to you. Ample sleep (8 to 10 hours) is important for you and your baby. Try to sleep on your left side to improve blood flow to you and your child via the placenta.
